The Fast Flying Ferries Department (Including the departure schedule and the tariffs)

IJmuiden has a fantastic connection with Amsterdam by means of a regular ferry service, which enables the traveller to reach Central Station in about 25 minutes.
This project has sprung forth from a governmental study investigating means to call a halt to the ever increasing traffic (jam) problems and the viability of public transport over water. This because we seem to have plenty of that stuff all over the country and for some reason it doesn't clog up as easily as tarmac does.

The outcome was positive enough to start an experiment and so, since 1998, we have Fast Flying Ferries to hop us up and down, to and fro respectively Amsterdam or IJmuiden, depending on which side you start from. The boats are so-called "hydrofoils" of the"Voshkod" type. Russian made, they were used for passenger transportation over the vast Russian lakes, and are still serving their purpose to this day. After their arrival in Holland they were fitted with brand spanking new 1100 horse powered MAN diesel engines that can make the ship travel up to 80 kilometres per hour. The boats themselves can seat up to 79 passengers and have space on deck for about 20 bicycles as well (a perfect way to get to the beach from Amsterdam). Take your seat in the front of the boat, and the view gets thrown in for free.
It's great to take a seat in the front of the boat and sit back while the harbours, and later the countryside, fly by. You'll feel tiny next to huge, looming sea tankers on their way to or from either Amsterdam or the North Sea, through IJmuidens' locks. You think you're travelling fast until you see a small police boat overtake the hydrofoil and by the time you realize what you've seen, you're there. This is truly a nautical highway.

On Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays the ferry leaves Velsen at 6.30 and then 6.45, 7.00 etc... until 9.30. After that there's one every half hour until 3.30 pm (15.30), when the .45 service returns until 6 pm (18.00). Then the half hour service returns until 8.30 pm (20.30).
On Thursdays and Fridays the schedule is the same, only it goes on until 11.30 pm (23.30).
Saturdays there is a half hour service from 9.30 am until 11.30 pm (23.30).
The same on Sundays , only until 10 pm (22.00)

From Amsterdam everything is half an hour later, so on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays the first ferry leaves at 7.00, then 7.15, 7.30 etc... until 9.30. Then there's one every half hour until 4 pm (16.00) when the .15 sevice starts again until 6.30 pm (18.30). After that there's a half hour service again until 9 pm (21.00)
On Thursdays and Fridays the schedule is the same again, only it goes on until 12 am (0.00).
Saturdays there is a half hour service from 10 am until 12.00 am (0.00).
The same on Sundays , only until 10.30 pm (22.30)

On September 7th, October 5th, November 2nd and December 7th 2008 there is a special service going from Amsterdam to the Beverwijkse Bazar and back. There are three sailings from Amsterdam in the morning; 08.45, 10.15 and 11.45.
Returning boats leave Beverwijk at 2.30 pm (14.30), 4 pm (16.00) and 5.30 pm (17.30).

The journey lasts about 40 minutes
